Nerves are a pain. New health discoveries. Everyone is over worked.

Life is hard. Life is harder with damaged nerves. Life is also what you make it. I’m trying to make the best of my body falling apart before I’m even thirty. This is another health update in sharing research and giving advise to others trying to heal from pain or issues invisible but deeply felt. I feel my research is lacking from being over worked and tired all the time. Damaged nerves cause a different kind of tired, one that cannot be solved with sleep or more coffee.

I’ve got some good news in discoveries but going to share some symptoms first to compare on my next health post. First, I am over worked and so are all my friends. Can you relate? I want to share how important it is to balance your work and health even with baby steps towards your goals. I work forty hours a week and like many others live pay check to pay check. No, I do not have an iPhone, or WiFi, shop online, have a kid with no father, go on vacations, or what ever other small minded judgement I’ve read others write in attacking the younger work force.

There are no Generations, there are just people. I am not apart of a generalize group. I am me, always worked and finished two degrees, and living on my own. Only one loan because of my injuries delaying school. Which are not any huge accomplishments, but seems to be in our society today. The point is even if your health issues are different from mine, you still risk being over worked affecting your health. It’s a viscous cycle. You have health issues so you have to work more to pay for doctor bills or medication. In my case, treatments and vitamins. #holisticliving Now if you take off of work to rest, then you may suffer later when a bill is due. The stress of money adds more pain to what you are already feeling and the cycle continues.

This is when the skill of saying “No” comes in. I have said no to those who suck up my energy, no to plans that would leave me in bed for days later, no to others’ responsibilities, no to working over time, no to anything that would negatively impact my health. You should try it too.#NoBoundaries

This week I worked with only one day off and then eight hours over. I finally had a two day break in which I stayed in bed mainly trying to turn my brain off with Korean dramas. The day I had to go back to work in when the stress of the week finally hit my body…I felt like I had been shish kabobbed. My spine, ribs, hips, and shoulder blades all hurt reacting to the rods in my back with the constant pressure of my lower back and neck going against them. I, dependable worker called in sick.

The next two days at work I’m still fatigued and having signs of someone who has not slept or has cognitive damage even though I have neither, I hope…This is what nerve damage can be like. Then even with all this going on I’m thinking of working a third job, yes that is right. I know my body reacts to stress more and the stress of money could do just as much harm. For the record I do sales at a hotel forty hours a week, then work as a social assistant to families in homes on demand.

A year from now as my Chiropractor said, I may be back to the quality of life I was use to and that he was not giving up on me #GodBless. My doctor also identified something that could help explain the constant fatigue and imbalances in general. This  was that my adrenals were tapped out….I’ve done research and post on hormones balance before but did not have much knowledge on important the adrenal glands had to do with hormone function. I finally found out why sitting at church when I stand up to sing I have to take deep breathes or I will feel faint like. Light headiness is a symptom. It’s sad what we become accustom to.

Basically your adrenals glands release hormones to deal with daily life stress and even trauma. Hormones releasing and reacting to our daily lives keeps us moving and accomplishing stressful tasks without being over whelmed or having a melt down. After a while of a person dealing with constant stress or never resting in recovery from trauma causes the adrenals to tap out.

This process takes years to occur so when the symptoms of adrenal fatigue start showing, it could take up to a year to repair them back into full function order. This also is not recognized by most doctors until it is chronic in which it then called Addisons disease. The next things to happen is thyroid issues and high blood pressure. Which makes sense when you think about it.

I know others that have these symptoms and can connect it to their stress of life from experiences of childhood to adulthood. I can easily see a connection on why we all have our adrenals tapped out. Some examples are being in less than a safe environment as a child, and the person dealing with it mentally and shutting down emotionally, but their adrenals still releasing hormones for the person’s survival. Another is a person who was highly intelligent as a child being put on dangerous meds so their parents could collect a check in saying the child was mental. Years after being taken off such medication, the person had to feel everything at once. Then life becomes a copping game.

I’m sure others have similar stories and at the age 27, I’m not giving up on the quality of life I worked for, being an  all around healthy being just because the adrenals did not get any love or support. Yes, you can deal with stress in a healthy way mentally at the time, but it does not mean physical scars are not left behind after so many occurrences. The three main things to heal your adrenals are to change your diet, manage stress, and take supplements. Luckily I’m already doing all the recommends foods in my regular eating. Basically whole foods and cutting out fake or processed foods. Then there is learning new ways to deal with stress. I enjoy zumba, which I just started back in my home till I build up to a class, and learning Korean.

I have also cut down on coffee to allow my body to heal. My regular coffee consists of 2-3 americanos a day, that’s 6 six  espressos if you didn’t know already. Caffeine can affect your hormones in making cortisol high in non stressful situations and making it hard to shut down. I know why coffee does not affect me with shakes or keeping me up as it normally would. My body already has hormones working to keep me fighting constantly. This is why I can walk at night by myself in a parking lot like a thug.  Until something affects my nerves, then I feel as if I could go into a comma for days.

The third thing to help get those adrenals working again is taking the right supplements. Taking supplements and eating healthy can be expensive so it is important to research the supplements right for you and not falling for every super food out there. From my last health update I posted how I was taking glutamine from TAG,  alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin B. I stopped taking the alpha lipoic acid from nausea. I saw a difference in taking the vitamin b and just switch to a whole food vitamin b recommended from my doctor. I take the glutamine when I have been more active, and do not want to risk feeling the effects of torn tissue which is getting better with sound wave treatments.

By the way, sound wave treatments are an effective way to break up torn tissue and have been used to break down kidney stones in the past. I’ll do a post on how it has helped after I’ve completed the treatments. I will tell you that it hurts, but it is worth being able to do light zumba in my home too.

The adrenals are similar to an avocado in having three layers responsible for releasing different types of hormones. I found several links that are easy to read in understanding their functions and listing the symptoms of those with adrenal fatigue. The standard process company also explains what supplements to take depending on your level of adrenal dysfunction. I am currently on the Drenamin that you can find in the link provided.

After dealing with these health issues for almost three years now, finding new information that matches to improving things is really exciting for me. So I want to share the real issues, but also how you can heal naturally with the right doctor, foods, supplements, and knowledge of what is wrong and how to repair it. I have had others tell me I am on the right path and appreciate the encouragement. I could of easily became an regular drinker in dealing with all my pains and stresses if I did not have any answers. I could of easily became dependent on pain pills. I could of easily accepted there was no cure for the many issues my body was having, but I decided to just take it one step at a time.

Vegan Chocolate cupcakes with strawberry surprise!

Hello fellow vegans and those just trying to eat healthy! I made these for the 4th of July and had no complaints:) I’m not vegan, but baking vegan is ideal when your dairy free and want a healthier alternative to processed goods. I have the recipe posted with just a few tips….

Going down the ingredients list, I used King Author’s unbleached all purpose flour(GMO free). This could easily be turned Gluten free with the choice of flour too.
I used Ghirardelli Cocoa powder (GMO free) *You can check these companies sites to see their non GMO claims.
Unrefined sugar of course is needing, and I used light brown sugar since the recipe didn’t specify.
The choice of oil would probably make a difference in taste. I used coconut oil and the cupcakes didn’t even have a coconut flavor so not to be worried.
Now for the filling…I either like to stuff my cupcake with lots of filling or the recipe doesn’t give an accurate amount to use. I recommend having more than just 2 cups of strawberries. With this recipe I made 2 1/5 pans of full cupcakes and had to make the filling twice. The second time I added bananas to the mix. Yum! I also didn’t see the point of cornstarch as it just clumps up into white chunks in the mix. A simple simmer of organic strawberries with cane sugar added is perfect.

Finally cut out the middle of the cupcakes carefully and set the left overs aside for another creative dessert. You could even make cake balls with them! I ended up getting creative with my soul sister and making a mini peach cobbler. We simple mixed the cupcake crumbs in some water and honey then made a layer at the bottom of a baking pan. She then simmered peaches on the stove, could add cane sugar, cinnamon, or vanilla extract. We added the peaches on top of the chocolate layer and heated in the oven 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. It was donut good, and the crumbs weren’t wasted. Get creative!

Hope you enjoy this recipe! These are nice and rich. A little heavy without the egg but feel free to add one if your not vegan and let me know how it turns out.

Pastries are like a piece of heaven to me so….Cinnamon roll time!

Hello! My name is Shawna and I have a pastry addiction. The smell and thought of a fresh baked good takes me back to some fairy tale land were there is endless turnovers, pies, and donuts. But wait! I’m a foodie now and bleached flour and refined sugar is no longer welcomed. That’s okay because there are plenty of healthy alternatives that contain the real stuff that makes a pastry, a pastry! It’s those little things you don’t notice until you become aware like the long list of ingredients on those store bought cinnamon rolls. I’m not condoning any company or person who chooses to eat the F.A.D. (failed American diet) I’m just sharing my experience for those who want to make a change, but feel overwhelmed at not being able to eat their favorite foods. Like I’m going to give up cinnamon rolls haha…No…So first option is to make your own in which I would just use organic ingredients and unrefined sugar. The other option is buying already made cinnamon rolls from a whole foods store. I just want to show the difference in making healthy choices to give awareness. When eating healthy you have to constantly check ingredients that you have listed as bad for your health and scan every list for those ingredients. The longer the list the better chance for me to just give up and put it down because a cinnamon roll should not have over 30 ingredients! The ones to look out for in pastries for example could be ADA, refined sugar, bleached flour, hydrogen oils, MSG(modified anything), and artificial flavors. Really is it that hard to just to use real cinnamon than artificial flavor!? Don’t forget the FDA is approving all this ingredients even though they are not used in the same brand of stuff in other countries. Research yourself to see what I mean. Anyways I take a healthy fresh baked cinnamon roll over a cold processed one any day.

Here is an example of a processed cinnamon roll ingredients list…..
untitled (2)

Can you read all that?! I know it is not the best picture but really why does a cinnamon roll need all those ingredients especially when half of them are not even real food? I can already spot the ADA listed. Start looking at ingredient lists to see what you can find the FDA trying to poison you with seriously I shouldn’t have to worry about these things when in another country those harmful ingredients are not allowed or used in the same exact brand name company products. Yet some how they are added into our food supply?!

Here is a real cinnamon roll compared to what is offered above….

Do you see how big of a difference in length of ingredient lists that is? I’m giving props to this company for not using unnecessary ingredients.

You can research yourself to see the difference or just start reading labels.  Just like the can says, these were immaculately delicious!

I’m glad to enjoy a healthy pastry that isn’t linked to disease later because that really is a piece of heaven and peace of mind.

Here’s to Keeping it real!

Your judging me for judging? Say what!?

It’s time for some spiritual and mental discussion as I promised in starting this blog. This issue could go in so many ways but I hope it speaks to you in one way or another in making a change with daily thoughts and judgments. I am not perfect and need daily correction but having an eternal mind set does help. I’m mainly speaking to those of us professing to follow after Jesus. Religion isn’t going to save me only Jesus paid that price, its all about the relationship for me. I am also speaking to those who have been judged by other religions because they can be the most judgmental of all. I think the problem is people are mixing judgment for accountability. Holding a person to their actions is not judging, but accountability which is what Godly people should do when each other fall under sin.

This does not mean gossiping behind each others back about each others sins. If you actually read the bible, then you know it says to talk to your fellow friend in Christ about their struggles in offering prayer and accountability towards them in overcoming that sin, not shouting it to the world! Now I haven’t had much problems with people spreading rumors about me because truth is there’s not much to say. Live a life where the preacher doesn’t have to tell lies at your funeral. But this behavior is a pet peeve of mine and the constant correction I have to do to people who are professing believers is becoming redundant.

Try seeing if these examples apply to you or a situation you were once in. I was talking to a friend one day over a couple who just starting dating. I knew nothing about the boy or girl’s behavior towards a relationship, but had nothing bad to say about them and only wished them the best. My friend on the other hand voiced how the girl was a wild child and needed a boy to ground her. Now in my head if you are able to make statements like that, then you must know this person on a different level with facts to back up your statement. This is usually not the case. I ask “why do you say she is a wild child?” The response was a long pause then a “I can just tell by looking at her.” SMH This then states anyone who looks different than you with colored hair, cloths, or make up is always a wild child…please just stop before I put you in your place.

Try giving people the benefit of the doubt, they may surprise you. My friend’s reaction to holding accountability on her words was that I was judging her for judging. No I was holding you accountable for your words, there is a difference. We have to remember what we perceive in life is not always truth. If you spread a rumor about a person and find out its not true then retract your statement to those you told so then the lie doesn’t grow. This kind of negative mind set is killing the Christian culture by making them out to break the own rules they profess to follow. I’m not about the Christian culture but the Jesus culture. Christian culture says you can go to church and only speak with other Christians in getting your free pass to heaven. This is false and without the Holy spirit working through you in making daily accountability changes to your life then you become an empty vessel allowing the world to fill you up instead.

Another situation I found myself in was with two ladies who were taking pictures for prom. There were several girls dressed up and waiting to take pictures. I was in a conversation were one parent and their child were looking at another girl’s dress and the mother voiced how her daughter’s dress is way prettier. What the? I step in and voiced to these people that I condemn any death spoken over that girl. I spoke life over the girl as having a pretty dress and every girl’s dress was lovely in its own way. I explained that there are no winners in comparing. If you compare yourself to a person as you are better than them, then you are putting them down and being creating un-humble thoughts of one self. If you compare yourself to a person as being better than you, then you creative negativity thoughts about one self. There are no winners we are all on different life journeys and should stick on our own paths instead of following others, otherwise you’ll end up as someone or somewhere your not meant to be. I could write many examples like these but I think you get the point.

My goal is to change the way people think about their roles as a Christian in judging as it was intended and how it’s being done. We are not the Judge, God is, we are only to guide and hold people accountable. Jesus said to go and sin no more. He challenged the religious on their beliefs but he didn’t beg them to follow him. Either you choose to be in the kingdom or not, but judging others will not make you closer to God. Realizing how much you have sinned and accepting God’s grace while sharing your new freedom will lead others to Christ. Once you have that accountability in your life with people you trust, then you know when they correct you out of love and their intentions are for you to grow spiritually not bring you down with judgment.

I love learning about different cultures and feel cultured in some respects. Learning about others can silence the voices of negativity that form over the unknown. I have many places to visit and conversations to have before I can be considered cultured but I go with this definition for right now. Being cultured means you have an open mind in that you make no facts in your head about a person who is different than you until you actually have a relationship with that person. All Christians do not act the same, all Muslims do not act the same, all Jews do not act the same and so on. This kind of thinking changes everyday decision for some people on how they live based on how others see fit instead of doing what they think is right. I for instance, like to wear a head wrap. My cultured fashion does not equal I’m a terrorist but that it was raining that day and nobody has time for that. There are many cultures that wear turbans for beliefs such as Sikhs. The key to building the kingdom is speaking life over each other and encouraging each other through life struggles while being accountable were it is due.

Banana nut butter wrap

GRACE - WIN_20140406_134655

This is an easy, healthy snack that actually fills you up! I use all organic ingredients for optimal health but make it your own! I use

image

Ezekiel’s tortillas, but regular flour tortillas are fine. First spread a thin layer of real honey on the tortilla. Choose your favorite nut butter such as organic almond or peanut butter to spread over the honey. Slice and spread about half an organic banana on the tortilla as shown. Next add some Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips. To spice it up, I add a dash of cinnamon and some walnuts. Get creative! This snack always gives the perfect chocolate fix while keeping me from biting peoples heads off when I’m hungry or are on the go.  Warning they are addicting and this easy good tasting snack may have you buying bananas every week but its so worth it! Enjoy!

Better than all those other recipes on Google, My creation of White Chili. Oh La La….YUM!

Like what you see?! Wait till you smell and taste it as well .

This recipe is as easy or hard as you make it. No SALT needed

I literally threw this together from gathered information on how to make white chili and because I lost the one favored recipe over the years. So when those crumbled up recipes disappear it time to see whose got the real stuff haha.

First check to see if you have any of these food items before you make a list to shop for. I made this with health intentions such as fresh tomatoes instead of canned ones. Canned food in general I believe from research is a big cause of cancer after WWII when everything was being canned instead of jarred. Something definitely spiked the charts.  So if you want, precooking the beans would prob be better than canned as well. Just try to find BPA free canned foods. The tomatoes are more of a risk because their acidic levels can cause more absorption of BPAs through can linings. Better safe than sorry so posting a link of this issue at the bottom. Now back to yummy, hot, tasty chili!

Pick up some: All these ingredients are organic

1- Two Red bell peppers (for color and vitamins)

2-One big yellow onion (flavor and color)

3-Two cans worth of Great white northern beans

4- Two cans worth of pinto beans

5- Three of your favorite kind of tomatoes

6- Two cans worth of corn (GMO free taste way better) or one frozen bag of organic corn.

7- Two packets of organic Ranch packets

Ranch-Dip

8- Fresh cilantro

9- Two packs of frozen chicken thighs, white meat from chicken breast doesn’t fit the bill for this recipe. (Free of Antibiotics and Hormones) Thank you FDA for pumping our food full of antibiotics for years just to come out with a statement that its causing super bugs. DUH!

10- Swanson’s organic chicken broth. I used three small boxes. But two will suffice.

Extra food to look into would be bread! I buy the sour dough soup bowls from Publix. A loaf of French bread would be good for dipping as well. But I’m going to go all fancy with the bowls! I now make my own bread because so many breads contain ADA.

Prepare one big pot to boil the chicken.

Have your beans precooked drained or cans all opened.

Pour chicken stock in another large pot on medium heat.

Add the beans and corn UN DRAINED if using cans.

Dice the tomatoes, and red bell peppers

Keep the onion whole! From my grandfathers cooking skills its a European thing in giving the soup color and flavor. Just drop it in and it’ll break apart from the heat and stiring. Pull the skin out at the end.

Add the diced tomatoes and red bell peppers

Take a small stalk of cilantro to dice the leaves from the stems. Throw in the diced leaves.

Add just one of the Original Ranch seasoning packets.

Keep on medium heat or a little higher but not on high and stir.

This soup, if done right takes a few hours to get that savory flavors mixed together.

Take a break but don’t let the bottom of the pot burn. Enjoy your time reading my blog for instance 😉

Keep an eye on the chicken.

Bonus fact: I’m a fan of  Shark Tank and one pitch was for boneless ribs, but the bones create the flavor so no one would touch those, except the guy who invented a way to cook them first them take the bone out! So if you think about getting the skinless, boneless chicken thighs then its your risk.

I use gloves and hand pick out the meat parts only. Once the chicken is cooked and cooled, make sure it has time to cool or a burn will be in your future, then add it to the other pot cooking. Once the chicken is added then add the second packet of original ranch seasoning. Stir, stir, and stir, do a lil dance and stir.

Confession: I always dance while cooking and it seems to be genetic.

Two hours at this time should be enough for your chili to be perfect!  Also feel free to make this your own as I understand not everyone is a health nut like me. Just trying to give easy, healthy, and flavorful recipes. Taste test and enjoy with loved ones!

Caribbean black beans and rice recipe inspired by Pompano Joe’s beach restaurant

I was eating at Pompano Joe’s on the beach which was one of the best vaca ever by the way:) but I don’t just want good food while on vaca so I studied my plate and went to cooking!

Here’s a picture of their black beans and rice.

I usually research tons of recipes till I find one most like I'm trying to create then use it as a guide while taking out or adding more ingredients than the actually recipe. I like to think the rest is filled with luv<3 To keep any recipes from getting messed up while cooking I used one of my mom's magnets to hold it up over the stove where i can see it as i cook:)

I like to think the rest is filled with love.To keep any recipes from getting messed up while cooking I used one of my mom’s magnets to hold it up over the stove where i can see it as I cook:)

First cook some old fashion white rice. I luv white sticky rice but if your going healthy you can use brown or wild rice I suppose just can't make any promises on it tasting the same. If you hate white rice then it will prob taste pretty good to you though. Cook as the box says for how many serving you think your'll need. I cook 2 cups worth.

Now for a short cut as I think of all the ppl out there with children and lives! I use bell peppers for a lot of recipes bc they taste good and are good for you:) This recipe calls for finely chopped bell peppers though and how lucky was I to find this at publix containing all three colored bell peppers already chopped up?! Located by the salad stuff. So if you already have bell peppers use them or you can buy this. The next thing is to get a yellow onion which they provide as well if you don't have one around the house.

So here comes the fun part! Thow in the whole thing of bell peppers, chooped onion, and chopped celery about 1 cup each. I use extra virgin olive oil to saute it all. This can be on med heat while your rice is covered staying warm. I like my onion to be almost carmelized while the bell peppers are a tad crunchy, So you can use your own judgement as when to add stuff. Next depending on ur luv of garlic you will want to add just a little or a whole clove. I'm afraid of the garlic taking away from the caribbean taste I'm going for. So I add only a tsp of minced garlic to the pan. Notice how you prob can't see it in the picture bc I want it to flavor it but not over power. So lets review the pan should have bell peppers, onion, celery, and a lil garlic. Just add 1 TBS of oregano to the mix.

Lastly add 2 cans of black beans. I use bush's canned beans bc it doesn't have any added stuff like salt or special sauce. We just want black beans in only water if possible. IMPORTANT! This comes from experimenting with cooking. I only made this recipe because I love the black beans and rice I had on vacation last week at the beach. But I don't just want good food while on vaca so I studied my dish to make this taste and even look the same. The goal is to get the mix to soak down into the rice. To do this you must no drain the can just toss the whole thing in there:) cook till the beans have been able to warm up about 20 min. After adding the beans add 1/8-1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper. This is going to give it that caribbean kick! So if you can't take hot stuff only put 1/8 of a tsp into this to the mix. Towards then end add 2 TBS of white vinigar also to make it a lil runny if all the liquids are evaporated. you want it to be a lil soupy to put over your rice.

Most would add cans of black beans but my point of blogging is to share health not cancer causing chemicals, so either find a BPA free cans, soak beans overnight. Eden is BPA free!   1620426_10152286462980350_535938943_n

What’s this Blog mainly about?

Hi! My name is Shawna, but I prefer Miss Shawna.

34220bafa38626197edaf1dd672c7e24

This is my first blog and I made it to share the things that make my life easier to help others. I also have friends who keep telling me to post recipes so they are getting their wish.  I usually have friends ask me about health related issues when it comes to finding a more natural way too. I mainly want to share a healthy outlook on life through food, exercise, and health experiences that I had to go through to get in better shape. I am no stranger to pain from unknown bad style choices I made. When I say unknown style choices, I mean that I wouldn’t of know doing aqua zumba, only once a week could help my back pain. I didn’t know that taking certain natural minerals and foods could make that time of the month, unbalanced hormones and all its problems disappear. I didn’t know that there could be ways to make your favorite food healthy until I started experimenting in the kitchen. I believe God has put on this earth everything we may need to naturally cure us of our health problems whether inside or out.

I’m only speaking from my experience and am not against modern medicine. I am only against chemicals and medicine when there is way safer and more natural way to prevent and cure issues.
What I do may not work for everyone, but if you want to try researching a healthier way to fix a problem maybe my blog can help you. I only researched this stuff for seven plus years with trial and error until I got where I wanted to be. I’m what personality tests call the scientist, so yes I love to research and research, and research! I am also a future teacher and have that desire to teach so I hope to teach something about health to my readers.

I would of wanted someone to tell me this stuff years ago and I would love nothing more than to save people from the frustrations I went through on trying to solve certain problems. Your mind, body, and spirit are all connected and each needs to be balanced in your life.

For me, I’m very strong minded and grow my spirit when ever possible, but my body lacks and shuts down when my brain says go! I’m sure some people can relate. But if you are one of those people be glad! I would rather have a determined mind to get me to my dreams, than be in perfect health because sometimes those in perfect health can’t deal with the metal challenges in life and never find the way to their dreams. It’s all about will power, determination, discipline, and lots of prayers.
